I sent a link to my membership site letting people know that this month’s focus will be around “anxiety”. I had several people respond to it so decided it was appropriate to follow up with a blog.
If you have no anxiety running in the background, I would say that you are a rare person. Most of us have some anxiety running at all times, sometimes it is quieter and sometimes it gets louder but it is there.
The first thing to do is identify what you are feeling anxious about. This might take some sorting out. You may assume it is one thing but when you really reflect or journal around it, something else, something deeper may emerge.
What is your anxiety linked to? Fear you will not please someone else? Fear that what you want will never happen? Fear you will be disappointed? Fear of illness or death? Fear of not having enough money? Fear that you will not “be enough”? Fear of hurting another person’s feelings?
Once you identify your fear, ask yourself, “Why is this causing me to feel anxious?” “What is the anxiety really about?” “Where did I feel this way in a younger time of my life?”
You are making some progress here. You must have clarity about what is really going on in order to diminish it.
Up until now you may have realized that this certain situation made you feel anxious but you had never gone deeper into it. That would be like putting a band aid on a wound without cleaning it out first.
Begin to ask yourself some questions with an open, curious mind. “Is this true?” “Is it true that it is my responsibility to please this person?” “Is it true that I will never have the love I want if I don’t lose X amount of weight.” On and on
The anxiety is linked to some fear but it is difficult to find your way through it if you do not know what the fear/anxiety is REALLY about.
Certainly there is also physical nervousness/anxiety and panic attacks. They can be linked to past trauma or a current health situation. PTSD is something that would fall into this category but looking at each of the issues that cause the anxiety would reduce and diminish over time.
Once you have clarity around what the issue is and your limiting beliefs, you can begin to clear it.
How do you do that? I use EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique, most of the time. You can use Byron Katie’s “The Work”. You can journal around it, create affirmations, do self talk, meditation, yoga, walking…………or any other tools that you have. There are many You Tube videos on both of these and they are the tools that I teach in my classes and private sessions.
Even getting really clear can begin a shift!
It is very uncomfortable to have anxiety and it drains our energy. Sometimes it is a small bump to work through and sometimes it can be debilitating. It certainly can affect the decisions that we make in our lives!
Do some detective work and begin to find your way through. If you need help, let me know!
We are spending July working on this topic through my membersite.
