I had the pleasure of seeing “Lincoln” with Mona yesterday. We could not stop thinking about.
Powerful, riveting, deeply touching……..a very human story as it shared an important portion of our history. The making of history.
The acting……..superb. Daniel Day Lewis will be nominated for leading actor I am quite sure.
I have had the opportunity to be a part of two historical moments in just the last week. I wrote about the “Reconciliation Riders” last week where I was personally present and now this important historical moment portrayed in this movie.
The tying factor between the two is that it was during President Lincoln’s term in office that “The War of 1862” occurred. The call for the hanging of 303 Dakota was presented to him while he was in the midst of the bloody Civil War. Mankato, MN must have seemed a long way off to him. It was Lincoln that made the decision that a strong message needed to be sent to the Dakota that became the death sentence for 38 Dakota braves.
Watching the character in this movie, I would think that he did so with heavy heart.
Lincoln was shown pacing the dark halls of the White House late into the night. Sitting alone, talking to the young men who sent telegraphs, going to the hospital where the wounded and dying lie………. trying to stay connected to the heart and spirit of the people. Trying to be the leader.
He felt things deeply The weight of the job evident in his body.
It was a heavy position.
At one point, Ulysses S. Grant said to the president, “In one year, you have aged 10 years.”
Abraham on April 14, 1865: “Mary, I consider this day, the war, has come to a close … we must both be more cheerful in the future — between the war and the loss of our darling Willie — we have both been very miserable.”
He was shot that evening. Even though I knew that would be the ending, I didn’t want it to be. I wanted history to change and a different ending be given to us.
Some people seem destined for greatness but often that greatness takes a great toll on them. There is a great sacrifice given.
Abraham Lincoln could not have been anything but who he was, our 16th President. A great orator, a great leader during a very difficult time.
There are movies that touch me and that will stay with me for a very long time. This is one of them.
