I have been sharing “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga” by Deepak Chopra and David Simon the last few weeks. Today we are looking at the Law of Karma.
Karma is a word that often gets thrown around as kind of a buzz word. We talk about “good” karma and “bad” karma. In the Karate Kid they talked about “What goes round comes round.’
Actually quite true.
Deepak explains it in a very accessible way. For every action there is a reaction. For every choice there are consequences. If you do not like the consequences you are experiencing in your life, make different choices. Our present moment life was created from the choices we made in the past. It may take time to make all the changes you desire to create the “new way” you wish to live but the only place to begin is in the present moment.
We often like to blame our situation on others or even on Karma itself! Karma is not doing anything to us. It is not a boogie man out to get us. It is just telling us that if we turn here this is where we will arrive. If you want a different destination, you must choose a different path. You must make different and conscious choices.
Deepak gives us 3 steps:
1.”Witness the choices you make in each moment.” It is easier to be a witness if we are moving mindfully through our days. If you are dashing through each day packed with busyness it may be more difficult to spot the moment you are actually in a “choice point”.
2. Ask yourself these two questions, “What are the consequences of the choices I am making?” and “Will this choice bring comfort.”
You may be thinking, ” Well, that is well and fine but how am I supposed to know what the consequences will be or if it will bring comfort?
3. “Listen to your heart for guidance and be guided by its message of comfort or discomfort. If the choice feels comfortable in your body, move into it with confidence. If the choice feels uncomfortable, pause and reconsider.”
This takes practice but our bodies and hearts hold great wisdom. If we learn to get quiet and go within we will learn to decipher the messages we are receiving.
That is it! Life really is just one moment at a time. One choice at a time. As we learn to slow down, get quiet and listen we begin to move through our days with a greater sense of ease and flow…..and “Instant Karma” will not get you!!
Enjoy John Lennon singing, “Instant Karma”!
