This is the 3rd Law we are exploring from Deepak Chopra’s “The Seven Spiritual Law of Yoga”
Pure Potentiality……….powerful and deep………..it’s what Deepak brings to the table.
He states: ” The first spiritual law of success is the Law of Pure Potentiality, which states that at the core of your being you are pure awareness. This realm of pure awareness is the domain of all possibilities and underlies creativity in all its forms.” ” The realm of pure potentiality is the home of knowledge, intuition, balance, harmony, and bliss. giving rise to thoughts, feelings, and actions, it remains undisturbed. This domain is the womb of silence that gives birth to all forms and phenomena in life. It is your essential nature. At your core you are pure potentiality.”
So what is he really saying here? Let’s look at it this way. Let’s say at the core of your being was a virtual Amazon store. In this “store” there was EVERYTHING you would need for anything that you needed. All the raw material was there for any project that you wished to create, whether it was to restore a car or design an amazing architectural masterpiece. Not only are the materials there but also the inspiration, the ideas, the passion, the direction………EVERYTHING is here.
And you can take anything from the store and as much as you want and the store remains the same. The inventory is never depleted, the shelves do not empty and the doors are never closed……”it remains undisturbed.”
This is our nature. This is our essence. We don’t have to DO anything to deserve this! It just exists within us waiting for us to find the silence and the awareness to access it’s gifts.
How do we cultivate this awareness? He has 3 suggestions:
1. “Cultivate stillness in your body and mind. ”
How do you do that? People tell me all the time, “I have a monkey mind! I can’t stop my mind!” And I say, “Welcome to the human race!” Who doesn’t have a busy mind?
I suggest to people that they practice just sitting still for a period of time. You can begin with 10 minutes if you want. Can you just SIT still for 10 minutes and let yourself breathe and be quiet? Can you be OK with feeling with whatever is there? Once you can simply SIT for that length of time, begin to bring attention to your mind. There are a wide variety of methods of quieting your mind and I may address that in a later blog. For now, just focus on the words, “I breathe in” on your inhale and “I breathe out” on your exhale.
So how do you do that? Cultivate stillness? You take it on as a practice as you do anything else that you wish to learn.
2. “Practice shifting into a witnessing mode of awareness.”
Children can pretend and move into an imaginary realm very easily. We have spent so much time developing our thinking/analytic minds that not only do we find it difficult but we judge ourselves being silly and wasting time if we go there……..Here we are being asked to spend time in nature and to commune with nature. To sit quietly with a snowfall, a sunset or sunrise. To watch the birds or the phases of the moon. He asks that we just observe and breathe in the essence of what we observing. The peace we will find with our inner silence and communing with nature will bring us joy and reverence for that which is more eternal than the joy we get from instant gratification
3. “Practice non-judgement”
Relinquish any need to judge yourself for anything. The mantra for this day is, “Today I shall judge nothing that occurs.” Non judgement cultivates silence in the mind which gives us access to the field of pure potentiality.
Judging is so human. We all do it. When I catch myself, I will say, “Who am I to judge this person?” “How do I know what their day (their life) has been?” “Who says anything should look any certain way?” It does help. And when I remember to do that, it does quiet my mind and I will feel a greater connection with that person.
There is plenty here to help you practice and experience moving into this place of pure potential………
All for this week! Next week we will move on to the next law…….
